Disability Rights Texas
Company Overview
Disability Rights Texas is the federally designated legal protection and advocacy agency (P&A) for people with disabilities in Texas. Our mission is to help people with disabilities understand and exercise their rights under the law, ensuring their full and equal participation in society.
Company History
Disability Rights Texas is a 501(c)(3) taxexempt not-for-profit Organization funded primarily by public tax dollars. It was originally established under the name Advocacy, Inc. in 1977. The purpose of the Organization—then and now—is to protect and advocate the rights of persons with disabilities in Texas. In March 2011, the Organization changed its name to Disability Rights Texas, in order to better align with the larger National Disability Rights Network, the nonprofit membership and technical assistance organization for the federally-mandated Protection and Advocacy (“P&A”) systems and Client Assistance Programs (“CAP”). The establishment of the P&A system followed a high-profile media investigation in 1972 of Willowbrook, a New York State institution for children with mental disabilities. At that time, the press exposed deplorable conditions and inhumane treatment of residents at the government-operated institution. In response, Congress passed several pieces of legislation to protect and advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. Since its early days, when designated as the Protection and Advocacy Organization for Texas, the Organization has helped thousands upon thousands of Texans with disabilities to break through obstacles of discrimination, ignorance and negative stereotypes so that they may achieve their personal goals and dreams. Over time, the Organization’s mandate has grown with laws that expand the rights and services available to people with disabilities. DRTx is headquartered in Austin, Texas but has a statewide presence with offices across Texas.
